G. I. Taylor's Electrostatically Deflected Soap Film

The Unstable Regime

Home

In order to capture these pictures of a deflected soap film popping, it was necessary to use high speed photography. The entire event occurs in roughly 1/3,000 of a second.

The mathematically interesting question is "What is the shape of the film during rupture? Is the singularity a corner or a cusp, or something else?"

The v5.0 is capable of reaching speeds of up to 60,000 pps at a maximum pixel resolution of 256x32.
